Seven old school messages to the church that are still a hit today:
Steely Dan's classic "Dirty Work" opens with the line, "I don't want to do your dirty work" — and it's the perfect lens for this week's study of the church at Pergamum in Revelation 2:12-17. Pergamum was the most affluent city in Asia Minor, a 1,000-foot acropolis housing major pagan temples to Caesar, Asklepios, Athena, Dionysus, and Zeus — literally "where Satan's throne is." Yet this church held fast to Jesus' name, even as one of their own, Antipas, was martyred for his faith. Jesus commends their courage but confronts a quiet danger creeping in: compromise. Not outright denial of Christ, but small concessions to a culture built on idolatry, immorality, and "anything goes" grace.
In this message, we trace how the devil rarely asks believers to renounce Jesus outright — he just invites us to do his dirty work one small compromise at a time, through the teachings of Balaam and the Nicolaitans. We also tackle the myth of religious pluralism head-on, contrasting the exclusive claims of Christ ("I am the way, the truth, the life") with every other path the world offers. As we step into our fourth year, the challenge is clear: will we be shaped by Christ or by culture? Jesus is watching how we treat people through our compromises — and He's calling His church to courageous faithfulness over convenience.
